Tyvek F Chemical Protective Suit

Coveralls designed to protect workers from hazardous materials or sensitive products and processes from contamination by people. The coveralls meet stringent DuPont quality standards:

  • Minimum garment dimensions ensure proper fit for all sizes.
  • Specified seam construction ensures seam strength, durability and integrity of the coverall.
  • Garment design, seams and closures adapted to barrier requirements.
  • Quality auditing by DuPont.
  • Carry the CE mark for Chemical Protective Clothing, which is category III Personal Protective Equipment.

Military TYVEK® "F" for high levels of protection from chemical warfare agents for military and civil emergency personnel.

DuPont has now introduced Military TYVEK® "F". This new product will provide a tough and safe barrier to all known chemical warfare agents such as:

  • hazardous dust and powders
  • organic and inorganic acids and bases
  • many commonly used gases
  • most organic solvents
  • blood and blood borne pathogens
  • certain chemicals in aerosol or spray form

TYVEK® "F" represents the first simple, economical and reusable or
disposable material for individual protection suits. It is also very suitable for a wide variety of uses in areas where there is, or there could be risk from, contamination from an industrial accident. It is easily adapted to combine chemical warfare protection with Counter Surveillance protection. Military TYVEK® "F" is available in olive green/white reversible color.

Technical Description

TYVEK® "F" is manufactured by laminating the basic TYVEK® flash-spunbonded polyethylene material to a barrier film which is coated with a polymer. The top polymer layer allows seams to be made with a heat sealing tape which includes the same barrier film and polymer as TYVEK® "F". Known chemical warfare agents will not permeate these seams.

TYVEK® "F" has the following characteristics:

  • Light Weight: 106 gr/m2 (measured by test method ISO 536)
  • High Strength: Bursting strength (Mullenburst): 560 kPa (measured by ISO 2960)
  • Tear Strength MD 12 N | XD 15 N (measured by ISO 4674: 1977)
  • Puncture Resistance: 24.9 N (measured by EN 863)
  • High Abrasion Resistance: Martindale: 2000 cycles (measured by EN 530 method 2, 00 abradant, 9 kPa load; including pressure drop test)
  • Waterproofness: Hydrostatic head: 20m H2O.
  • High Durability: Hydrostatic head after tropical ageing: 1, 1m H2O (7 days at 70°C and 100% R.H. plus 18,000 cycles of crumpling) (measured by BS 3424/14C; ISO 1419).
  • No major change in properties down to 70°C.
  • Shelf Life: 10 years when adequately packed.

While it is not suitable for fire fighting, TYVEK® "F" meets the minimum
requirements for resistance to ignition for chemical protective clothing
set by drafted European norms.

TYVEK® "F" is made of polymers which do not contain halogens in their
structural formula. Depending on the chemical contamination on the
garment it can be either incinerated without any harm to the environment
or buried in a responsible way.

Chemical Warfare Agent Protection

TYVEK® "F" provides an exceptionally high level of protection for very long periods against all known chemical warfare agents. TYVEK® "F" has been tested and certified by the prestigious TNO Laboratories in the Netherlands having passed all the standard NATO tests for chemical warfare protection. In addition chemical warfare testing facilities have satisfactorily subjected TYVEK® "F" to their own national test standards.

The results below confirm that TYVEK® "F" is one of the most effective
chemical warfare protective materials available in t he world today.

Biological Warfare Agent Protection

Military TYVEK® "F" provides a total barrier against biological warfare agents. A protective suit made from TYVEK® "F" to keep out chemical warfare agents will also provide barrier protection against biological warfare agents.

Individual Personal Protection

Military TYVEK® "F" is an ideal material for protective garments for soldiers on static duties and for civilians in military target areas. In addition it is an excellent material for garments giving a high level of protection during a liquid chemical agent attack after which it can be disposed of easily thereby avoiding time-wasting decontamination of the standard combat suit, webbing, personal equipment, etc.

An Interim Summary Report for Law Enforcement and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Protective Ensemble Testing

Test Objectives

The lack of affordable Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) has been identified as a major shortfall in preparing Law Enforcement and EMS personnel to respond to an incident of Chemical Weapon (CW) terrorism. To assist these responder communities, a study/test effort was undertaken to identify a range of low cost commercially available ensembles that could be used on the perimeter of an incident where very low levels of CW contamination may be present. The ensembles consisted of a high quality negative pressure mask, butyl rubber gloves and a range of chemically protective overgarments. In responding to this type of event, quality respiratory protective is the most critical aspect of the ensemble. Butyl rubber gloves provide superior protection against CW agents and the addition of a commercially available overgarment (elastic hood and wrist closures with built in boots) will provide liquid splash and some minimal vapor protection. It must be emphasized that this ensemble is intended for responder use in the cold zone only.

Test Results

The laboratory analysis of all passive samplers is used to determine the protection provided to the wearer in terms of a protection factor (PF). The ensemble?s protection factor (PF) is defined as the average exterior dosage divided by the average dosage inside the suit (police officer?s measured skin dosage);
PF = Exterior Dosage/Dosage Inside Suit

In other words, PF indicates how well the protective ensemble protects the police officer?s skin from chemical agent vapors as compared to the potential exposure without wearing the suit. For example, looking in the Table below the average PF is 43 for a police officer wearing the Tyvek® "F" suit with butyl rubber gloves, rubber boots, and MCU2P Mask. That means that the police officer?s skin protection from chemical agent vapors while wearing the Tyvek® "F" suit will be 43 times better than would be experienced while wearing no protection at all. Listed below are the average PF?s for the five suit configurations and the standard Maryland State Police uniform that were tested.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Breakthrough time alone is not sufficient to determine how long a garment may be worn. Safe wear time may be longer or shorter depending on the permeation behavior of the substance, the health risk that it represents, and the conditions of exposure.
